Mazda CX-5 Import Margins: How Dealers Calculate Landed Cost and Profit
A step-by-step method for dealers importing the 2025 Mazda CX-5 from China: every cost from FOB price to showroom, where margin is won or lost, and how trim mix changes the result.

The margin on an imported Mazda CX-5 is decided long before the car reaches your showroom. It depends on what you pay at the Chinese port, how efficiently the car is shipped, what your country charges at the border, and which trims you put in front of buyers. This guide shows how to build a landed-cost sheet you can trust, so the profit you plan is the profit you make.
What is landed cost?
Landed cost is the total cost of a vehicle once it is cleared and ready to sell in your country. For an import from China it has five layers: the vehicle price, getting it to your port, the border, local compliance, and preparation for sale. Missing any layer is the most common reason importers overestimate margin.
| Layer | Cost items | Who quotes it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Vehicle | FOB price per unit, by trim and colour | Exporter (proforma invoice) |
| 2. Transport | Sea or rail freight, marine insurance, loading method | Exporter (CIF) or your forwarder (FOB) |
| 3. Border | Import duty, VAT or sales tax, excise where applicable, port and terminal charges | Your customs broker |
| 4. Compliance | Conformity or homologation certificates, registration fees | Your homologation agent |
| 5. Preparation | Inland transport, pre-delivery inspection, accessories, marketing | You or your local partners |
How do I calculate the landed cost of one CX-5?
Work per unit, then multiply. A simple formula that most dealers use is:
Landed cost = FOB price + freight + insurance + import duty + taxes + port charges + compliance + inland transport + preparation
Two details change the answer. First, many countries calculate duty on the CIF value (vehicle + freight + insurance), not on the FOB price, so freight is taxed too. Second, VAT is often charged on the duty-paid value, which compounds the effect. Ask your broker exactly which base value is used in your market, and build the sheet in that order.
Where do importers lose margin?
- Compliance surprises. The CX-5 we export is a China-market specification. If your market requires Gulf (GSO) or other conformity certificates, the cost and time of that process belong in the sheet from day one. See our market notes for each country.
- Half-empty containers. Freight per unit falls sharply when a 40HQ carries three or four cars instead of one. Combine trims and colours in one shipment — our container vs Ro-Ro guide explains the options.
- Slow-moving trims. A top trim that sits in the showroom for months costs more in financing than it earns in margin. Order the mix your buyers actually choose.
- Currency timing. Quotes are usually in US dollars. If your sales are in local currency, decide when you convert and how much buffer you keep.
How does trim mix change profit?
Every 2025 CX-5 trim shares the same 2.0-litre engine, gearbox and body, so freight, duty base and preparation costs are similar across the range — but retail prices are not. That makes the trim mix your strongest lever:
- The 2025 CX-5 Comfort brings buyers in at the lowest advertised price and moves quickly in fleet deals.
- The 2025 Style Pro adds a 360° camera, adaptive cruise and autonomous emergency braking — features buyers will pay for — without leather or power seats.
- The 2025 Elegance Pro is the showroom flagship that lifts the perceived value of the whole range.
A common approach for a first container is one entry trim for advertising, two mid trims for volume and one flagship for display. Your local market decides the right ratio.
What should a good exporter quote include?
A quote you can build a landed-cost sheet from names the exact trim and model year, colour, Incoterm (FOB or CIF, defined by ICC Incoterms® 2020), port of loading or destination, shipping method, payment terms, documents provided, and the delivery timeline. If any of these are missing, ask before you calculate.
