2025 Mazda CX-5 vs Toyota RAV4: Which Should Middle East and Latin American Importers Stock?
China-market Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 compared for importers: engines, gearboxes, hybrid options, dimensions and fuel use, and which buyers each SUV suits.

The Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 are the two compact SUVs importers ask us to compare most often. Both are built in China for the domestic market, both are left-hand drive, and both are known brands in the Middle East and Latin America. They suit different buyers, though, and the differences are mostly in the powertrain.
Figures below are China-market factory data: the 2025 Mazda CX-5 (Changan Mazda) and the latest RAV4 range from FAW Toyota, launched in November 2025. Specifications in other markets differ.
How do the CX-5 and RAV4 compare on paper?
| Mazda CX-5 2.0L (2025) | Toyota RAV4 2.0L (FAW Toyota) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length × width × height | 4,575 × 1,842 × 1,685 mm | 4,620 × 1,855 × 1,680 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,700 mm | 2,690 mm |
| Engine output | 114 kW (155 PS), 200 N·m | 126 kW (171 PS), 206 N·m |
| Gearbox | 6-speed automatic | CVT (simulated 10 steps) |
| Fuel use (WLTC) | 7.05–7.15 L/100 km | 6.29 L/100 km |
| Kerb weight | 1,518–1,558 kg | 1,630 kg |
| Fuel grade | RON 92 | RON 92 |
The RAV4 range also includes hybrid versions in China, with WLTC figures of 4.59 L/100 km for the 2.0-litre front-wheel-drive hybrid and 4.91–5.23 L/100 km for the 2.5-litre all-wheel-drive hybrids. The China-market CX-5 has no hybrid; its range adds a 2.5-litre petrol engine (196 PS) and an AWD Prestige trim in the 2024 model year.
Which gearbox is easier to support in my market?
This is often the deciding question for importers. The CX-5 uses a conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic, a type that independent workshops across the Gulf, Central Asia and Latin America service every day. The RAV4's petrol versions use a CVT and its hybrids an E-CVT with a hybrid battery system. Both are proven, but they need workshops and parts supply that understand them. If your after-sales network is mostly independent garages, the CX-5's simpler drivetrain is easier to support.
Which is better for hot climates and long highways?
For Gulf buyers who drive long distances at speed with the air-conditioning on, power matters. The 2024 CX-5 2.5L Premium (196 PS, 252 N·m) and the Prestige AWD are the CX-5s to compare against the RAV4's 2.5-litre hybrid. The RAV4 hybrid uses less fuel; the CX-5 2.5 offers a naturally aspirated engine and conventional gearbox without a high-voltage battery.
Which suits Latin American buyers?
Where fuel prices are high and buyers commute in traffic, the RAV4 hybrid's fuel use is a strong argument. Where roads are rough, repairs are done by independent garages, and buyers value driving feel and interior quality, the CX-5 is very competitive — the 2025 Style and Elegance trims in particular. Remember that Chile requires new vehicles only and model homologation; see our Chile market notes.
So which should I stock?
- Choose the CX-5 if your buyers value design, driving feel and a conventional automatic, if your service network is independent garages, or if you need AWD with a standard petrol engine.
- Choose the RAV4 hybrid if fuel economy is the main purchase reason and your market has hybrid-capable workshops.
- Stock both if you serve several buyer types — many dealers do, and mixed orders are possible through our wider supply network.
